Coral Springs can expect rain throughout the day today (Thursday), with intermittent periods of wind gusts of 40-50 MPH as a result of the outer bands of Hurricane Helene.  The National Weather Service is predicting 1-2 inches of rain for our area, with a potential for localized flooding.  As the storm moves north, rain will continue into the evening hours and is predicted to start dissipating between 7 and 10 p.m. in our area.

Hurricane Helene is forecasted to reach a Category 4 status before landfall at approximately 10 p.m. between Perry and Tallahassee, FL.  Emergency Management continues to monitor the storm.

A Tornado watch has been issued for Broward County until 8 p.m.

City operations impacted as a result of the storm:

  • Coral Springs Charter School is closed for all activities on Thursday
  • Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety is closed on Thursday

Crews are working to clear storm drains and remove debris from roadways and in our parks, however all parks and services remain open. Residents are encouraged to remain indoors throughout the day, if possible. For motorists, avoid standing water and allow for extra time to travel.

Out of an abundance of caution, Broward County Public Schools and Coral Springs Charter School are closed on Thursday, September 26, due to potential impacts from Hurricane Helene.

Hurricane Helene is expected to become a major storm making landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Due to the size and proximity of the storm, all of Broward County is under a Tropical Storm Warning Wednesday, September 25 - Thursday, September 26. In Coral Springs we could experience localized flooding and tropical force wind squalls between 37 mph and 57 mph, according to the National Weather Service. At this time, city operations are not impacted as a result of the storm. The city recommends the following:

  • To prevent flooding ensure all storm drains are clear of debris.
  • Bring items indoors that may easily blow over during wind gusts.
  • Avoid driving or walking in standing water.
  • Allow extra time for travel.
  • Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency text messaging by texting the keyword AlertCS to 888-777.

Several members of the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department are deployed with the USAR FL-TF2 ahead of the hurricane landfall to assist with search and rescue.
